Justin Townes Earle's Absent Fathers Available for Pre-Order Today

Fresh off the success of his recently released album, Single Mothers, Justin Townes Earle announced the companion album Absent Fathers to be released January 13, 2015. Also comprised of 10 tracks, Absent Fathers was recorded alongside Single Mothers as a double album, but as Justin began to sequence it, he felt each half needed to make its own statement and they took on their own identities. Absent Fathers is available for pre-order today on iTunes with an instant download the first single entitled “Call Ya Momma.” Physical pre-order bundles are also now available through the Vagrant webstore and feature new exclusive merch items. Stream the new song below.

Single Mothers was released on September 9, 2014 via Vagrant and, combined with Absent Fathers, the double album perfectly showcases exactly why Justin Townes Earle is considered a forefather of Contemporary Americana. Hailed as an album that’s “showing the world that alt-country can be pretty dope,” (Noisey/Vice), Single Mothers has had great radio success, peaking at #2 on Americana radio charts and #18 at Non-Comm.

Justin is currently on tour in the states and all upcoming dates can be found HERE. Expect more touring news to come.

BMG Acquires Vagrant Records

We are very excited to join the BMG Chrysalis US family! Read the full press release below via BMG:

LOS ANGELES, 17 NOVEMBER 2014 – BMG Chrysalis US has announced that it has acquired leading LA-based indie rock label Vagrant Records as part of a strategy to further build its North American new recordings business.

Vagrant co-founder Jon Cohen will become EVP Recorded Music at BMG Chrysalis US responsible both for Vagrant and for records released in the US through BMG’s ground-breaking Artist Services model.

Since its founding in 1996, Vagrant Records has signed a string of influential artists including The 1975, Eels, Bad Suns, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, PJ Harvey, School of Seven Bells, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Joe Lewis, Blitzen Trapper and Bombay Bicycle Club. As part of the deal, BMG is acquiring the entire Vagrant catalogue, as well as its rights to future recordings.

Laurent Hubert, President of Marketing & Creative at BMG Chrysalis North America said, “The acquisition of Vagrant Records is another milestone for BMG in the US as we build scale and capabilities in the recordings business just as we have in music publishing. Jon Cohen has built an impressive team at Vagrant, and with the support of BMG and its international infrastructure, we believe they will offer an unbeatable service both to Vagrant artists and to BMG’s Artist Services signings.”

Jon Cohen said, “It is impossible not to be impressed by what BMG has achieved in the US since it opened in the US just five short years ago. By putting service to artists at the centre of its offering, BMG is committed to offering a genuine alternative to traditional label deals. Together with the rest of the Vagrant team, I look forward to further growing BMG’s presence in the recordings business.”

The acquisition of Vagrant mirrors the acquisition by BMG Chrysalis UK in September of another renowned independent record label, Infectious Music, home to alt-J. Current Vagrant releases include The 1975’s self-titled debut album which is on course for sales of 250,000 in the US, James Vincent McMorrow who releases a deluxe version of his second album Post Tropical on November 11 and Brooke Fraser, whose fourth album Brutal Romantic is out on November 18.

Current BMG Artist Services projects include Bryan Ferry’s new album Avonmore, released in the US on November 18 and Monuments to an Elegy, Smashing Pumpkins first album through BMG, released December 9. BMG is currently working OK Go’s new video for ‘I Won’t Let You Down’, the second single from their acclaimed fourth album Hungry Ghosts. The video achieved over 10m views on You Tube in just six days.

BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch said, “We are delighted to welcome Vagrant’s artists and staff to BMG. While new technologies and ways of working continue to prove challenging to established players, BMG will continue to invest in the future of the music business, one which puts the interests of artists and songwriters at the very forefront.”

Dustin Kensrue Enters the Studio to Record New Solo Album

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Dustin Kensrue has entered the studio and is currently recording the long anticipated follow-up to his 2007 solo debut, Please Come Home. The new album is expected to be released next spring on Staple Records/Vagrant Records. Kensrue, known for his dynamic solo performances and as frontman for Southern California rock band Thrice, is engineering and producing the record on his own.

Recording right now is for me the end of a long distilling process,” said Kensrue. “I always have bits and pieces of songs that are bouncing around in my head. I usually record them and listen back later, and most of the time I can’t remember why I even bothered to record them in the first place. But then there are the tunes that stick – the ones I find running over and over through my head, demanding to be finished. Begging for a home. The most persistent of these tunes from the past 8 years are what I’m busy recording right now, and there’s nothing I’d rather be doing.

On November 26th, Kensrue will be performing at the 5th annual Thanksgiving concert, The Stuffing, in Atlanta, Georgia with Manchester Orchestra and O’Brother and more. Following that, the 2014 edition of the ‘Where’s The Band?’ tour will kick off in mid-December. All dates and ticket links can be found HERE.

Kensrue has also recently been confirmed to perform at the 2015 South By Southwest Music and Media Festival in Austin, Texas next March.

Bad Suns Premiere Powerful Video for "Salt" via MTV

Bad Suns are beyond pleased to share the powerful new video for their single "Salt," which was inspired by conversations between front-man Christo and a close friend experiencing gender dysphoria. Directed by award winning dancer, Daniel ‘Cloud’ Campos (appeared in Step Up 3D, The Uprising Begins and also directed Panic! At the Disco’s ‘This is Gospel’ and Paramore’s ‘Now’), the video uses powerful imagery and choreographed dance sequences to portray a transgender individual’s struggles with body image and identity and the journey through transition.

"As a band, our mission is to create art that evokes emotion. ‘Salt’ was written to universalize the idea of feeling trapped in the wrong body. As a band that had been fairly reserved in the past, we aim to make a statement with this music video. It is about the journey towards fulfillment and acceptance of oneself," says Christo. Watch the video and read the accompanying interview via MTV.

"Salt" appears on Bad Suns’ debut LP, Language & Perspective, which was released in June and available on iTunes. The band is currently on tour in the US in support of the release. A full list of tour dates can be found HERE.

WATERS Premiere New Video for "I Feel Everything"

WATERS is excited to share the fantastically grimy new video for their single "I Feel Everything"! "The video was shot at the Pink Motel, which is on the outskirts of LA and is a living artifact from the '50s," says frontman Van Pierszalowski. "It reflects the perfect combination of lost romance, grim present, and slightly hopeful coloring that the song is about. I'm tired of music videos with rock bands featuring smiling happy people with nice perfect haircuts. I wanted this video to be uncomfortable, and for the viewer to be filled with emotions, both positive and negative, because that is what the song is about." Check out the premiere via Billboard or watch below.

WATERS kick off their west coast tour with Tegan & Sara today. Starting at The Paramount tonight in Seattle, the band hits every major market along the coast, wrapping up in Los Angeles at The Palladium before a one off show on Nov 21st with Cold War Kids in Oakland. All upcoming tour dates can be found HERE.
